Howdy Peeps!!

Rainbow and Clouds

There's a song I'm sure most of you, if not all of you have heard before: Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Many of you probably heard the song when you watched The Wizard of Oz, with Judy Garland. I know that's where I heard it the first time.

There are many versions but one version I've recently discovered who the artist is, is Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (IZ) in his Facing Future album. To me it has almost a 'haunting beauty' to it.

That song has been playing in my head for weeks now. I purchased the song so of course I play it a lot as well, but it continues to play in my head after the song finishes.

What do the words really mean?

I know they will have a slightly different meaning to everyone. I'd like to know what it means to you – add your comments and thoughts below.

What does it mean to me? If I listen to the original with Judy Garland, it takes me back to the magical land of Oz. I remember watching it on TV and when it changed over from black and white to color. I always thought that was so cool!!

Dorothy seemed as if she were looking for somewhere else to be. She wasn't happy where she was, felt like she was getting in the way so was looking for a happier place – somewhere else, over the rainbow where those dreams come true. As I say that, it sounds sad, but it doesn't feel sad to me.

Now IZ on the other hand, I always get a happy feeling when I listen to his version. Though to me it feels like he's singing about death and dying. It feels like he's in spirit, enjoying the beauty of this world.

"The colors of the rainbow
So pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people passing by
See friends shaking hands saying
'How do you do?'
They're really saying, 'I, I love you."

He sees rainbows in everyone, on everyone's faces. It 's like he sees the beauty, deep down into their soul, of each person he sees. How many of us when we see a rainbow think of someone who has passed, or of an Angel trying to get our attention?

"I hear babies cryin
And are lost in hope
They'll know much more than we'll ever know"

This feels like future generations, the world changing in so many ways and they (the next generations) will know things so differently than we know them. And who knows, maybe we're the ones cryin…

'Well I see trees of green
And red roses too
I watch them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world"

This verse to me, sounds like he can see dreams blossoming, but you can't. It's like he believes in you, more than you do. And that's another reason it feels like he's in spirit. When someone is in spirit, they still believe in us. They want our dreams to come true, I think sometimes more than we do.

I know I only picked a few of the verses, but these are the ones that really speak to me. And if I sum these all up together, this is what it means (to me):

Believe in yourself, and believe in the future. It is here now, blossoming before your eyes. Enjoy the beauty.

Angel Blessings to you.

Sue
